Mike grew up in Oregon and when he started wearing a backpack it was a terrible fit. Even at a young age, he turned this experience into what would become a large company. This is because walking with this badly fitted backpack actually inspired him to make a better one and when his mother taught him to sew, he created his first backpack when he was only 16. Afterwards he opened a shop in California where backpackers and other travelers came to have their backpacks custom fitted. He made all the backpacks himself over several days and this was the humble beginnings of a new very successful company.
Eventually he realized he needed other people to sew for him when he started selling wholesale. This way he was freed up to create more designs using the innovative custom approach that had served him so well. From his experience he knew that design was crucial if you wanted a good fitting backpack. Design and good quality materials and expert sewing. These three things are still as important then as they are now to Osprey.

These outdoor experts want the best and Osprey strives to give it to them. They even have a history from their conception of supporting outdoor charities and organizations.
